The Sankara Eye foundation performed their millionth free surgery on Shanthi in 2013 and continue to provide free eye care across rural India; at villages, schools, even among transgender communities, working to eradicate curable blindness. Operable conditions like cataract account for a majority of the blindness in developing countries. The photographs were commissioned for their annual report, documenting their work along with portraits/ testimonials of patients who have regained normalcy in their lives through Sankara's work.
